In general, we’ve found that these are the easiest vegetables to grow in our gardens:
- Leafy Greens (micro greens, chard, kale, mustard, etc.)
- Beans
- Tomatoes
- Basil
- Root Crops
In general, we’ve found that these crops are are the most difficult:
- Brussels sprouts
- Watermelon
- Sweet corn
- Potatoes
The soil composition, soil depth, plant spacing, irrigation, and planting timing are all controlled in Urban Farm Co. gardens, allowing us to see which crops consistently do best on the Front Range. This has allowed us to create a cheat sheet for choosing your crops.
It’s ordered from crops that are usually the most successful at the top, to crops that we don’t suggest growing at the bottom (with a quick explanation of why). Remember that this order is approximate, and all gardens are different. The easiest vegetables to grow for one person might be different in another micro-climate.
